Global Positioning System

SnowQUEST uses a satellite-broadcast differential correction signal to provide precise real-time two-dimensional (X,Y) location data.

Ground Penetrating Radar

On-board software analyses the GPR signal data to infer the position of the ground reflection in each GPR scan, and computes the snow depth. The GPR snow depth data is paired with the GPS position data to provide a snow depth for each GPS position recorded during the travel of the data collection system.

Spatial Analysis and Mapping

Both the GPS and GPR data are loaded from the data collection device onto the SnowQUEST customer's computer.
The paired data are subsequently uploaded to the SnowQUEST Internet Server, which performs spatial interpolation and statistical analysis.
The resulting analysis and 3D Color Depth Maps are displayed interactively via a map browser applet running in the client's web browser.
Output may also be downloaded to facilitate printing of hard-copy maps.
